The PVC mat penetration device, Well B7, is located at Station B7 just beyond Sta. B6 close to an albizia tree and not far from the flood relief channel. This area is at the border between bulrush and sawgrass assemblages, although para grass dominates the immediate area around the well.

The following legend applies to the graph above:
Blue line is height of water above the "solid" bottom; green line represents "top of mat" calculated from tape reading from solid bottom to pipe lip.

DISCUSSION The location of this well close to a large albizia tree may be giving a spurious impression of the vegetation mat in this part of Kawai Nui marsh. The root mass of the tree is certainly influencing the nature of the sediment beneath the vegetation mat. However, note the stability of the mat itself. It is being considered that this well should be relocated, although information about the how the numerous trees that now grow over the marsh, suggests this station might be a valuable one.

The results to date from this site are interesting, in that like nearby Well B6, there has been little change in water depth through the dry months of 2002. All other sites monitored show a decline in water depth roughly comparable to the decline recorded at the water level staff gage (averaging 1.5 to 2.0 mm per day).
